4 Things your workout is missing
Are you feeling burned out? Bored with your workouts? Losing your passion? Or maybe you’re just diving into the world of fitness and everything just seems overwhelming? If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, your workouts may be missing some important components.
Purpose and Direction
First, ask yourself:
Why did you become interested in fitness? Why do you exercise?
Becoming your best self in regards to health and fitness starts with your “WHY”. Your “why” is your motivation. We all have an underlying reason as to why we woke up one morning and decided to make the change to live healthier lives. Maybe you were diagnosed with a disease and your doctor said you needed to lose weight to get better. Maybe you decided you want to run a marathon. Maybe you want to be a role model for your kids.
Find your “why” and run with it. Set some short term goals that are achievable and make a plan. How can you reach these goals? Having a purpose and sense of direction for your intentions will enhance your fitness journey.
Have you been doing the same workouts for weeks and finding yourself bored of the monotony? Don’t get stuck in a rut doing the same exercises with the same rep schemes at the same intensity. Switch it up! Our bodies become acclimated to doing the same things over and over again. Maybe you need more of a challenge; maybe you need some rest. If you’ve only been doing cardio, try lifting weights. If your body feels run down and you’re always sore from strength training, try throwing in a day or two of cardio or yoga instead. After all, variety is the spice of life!
If you’re having trouble getting yourself to the gym, it could be because you don’t have anything to keep you accountable. For some people, accountability comes easy when habits are formed, however that isn’t the case for most of us! Think of your time at the gym as an appointment with your boss. You can’t miss it and you can’t reschedule!
Working out in a group atmosphere is a great way to hold yourself accountable. Try exercising with a friend or in a group fitness class. You may even benefit from hiring a personal trainer! Having others to motivate you and challenge your abilities can help to keep you going.
Boring workouts will always hinder your progress! Exercise shouldn’t be boring. If you enjoy your workouts, you’re more likely to continue leading a healthy lifestyle and seeing results! Working out does not mean that you have to go to the gym. Find an activity you enjoy and turn it into exercise. So you like being outdoors… go for a hike or a walk in the park with your dog! You enjoy dancing… take a Zumba class or turn on some music and throw your own dance party in the living room. As long as you’re moving, you’re burning calories!
